Scarface for Xbox

While making a game based on a movie isn’t a new concept, making a good adaptation isn’t always easy, especially when you’re taking on a classic. Today we’ll be taking a look at a recently released movie-based title, Scarface: The World is Yours for the Xbox. Will this game be worthy of its title, or will it fall on its face? Read on to find out more.

The Story:

As expected, Scarface follows the adventures of Tony Montana, infamous Cuban drug lord, as he resurrects his empire and gets revenge on his nemesis who took everything he had, Sosa.

The game actually picks up just before the movie ends, but in the game Tony is able to escape the attack on his mansion with his life. Starting out with nothing once again, Tony must gain power and money by doing things his way. Along the way, he encounters a number of forces pitted against him, including cops, other mob bosses, etc.

The original story in the game is very well-done; it really feels like you’re part of a sequel to Scarface. There are many plot twists along the way and the development of Tony’s character is quite interesting.

The Gameplay:

From a gameplay perspective, Scarface plays very similar to Grand Theft Auto. You guide Tony through a variety of mini-missions in a wide-open city of Miami, with the same GTA abilities of taking cars, picking up weapons, eluding cops, etc. The missions are linked pretty closely to the story; you don’t end up completing a bunch of random tasks that have no connection. You also guide Tony as he takes over the city, by purchasing property, hiring goons, and creating a drug empire just to name a few things. There’s a ton of stuff to do in this game and multiple challenges to keep you interested.

The game offers some unique features in terms of gameplay, which is refreshing departure from the standard third-person shooter experience. One example is the aiming system, which allows you to lock onto a target yet still aim for certain vital body parts. There is also something called the “balls” meter, which fills up as you complete ballsy moves. Once the meter is full, Tony is able to enter a rage, where he becomes invincible and actually gains health as he kills people. I thought the game designers did a great job on the gameplay aspects that distinguish the game from GTA and others of this style.

The Graphics:

Scarface boasts decent graphics that aren’t overly impressive yet don’t detract from the gaming experience. The level of detail is pretty well-done, and Tony’s movements appear very natural. I did notice some oddities, like cloned characters, but overall the game looks great, especially the cut scenes.

The Audio While I usually am not impressed by the sound in a game, the sound in Scarface is simply fantastic. The sound effects are well-done, and the music flows well with the game. But the voice acting really sets the game apart. Although the voice isn’t Al Pacino’s, the voice actor does a great job of recreating the original Tony Montana. Tony’s vocabulary is very “colorful”, and he certainly has a large dictionary.

Conclusion:

Scarface: The World is Yours for the Xbox is, simply put, a really great game, maybe even the best movie-based game ever. With a top-rate story, fresh gameplay, and great character development, this game offers a high quality gaming experience that makes all the hours it takes to complete it worthwhile. Whether or not you’re a fan of the movie, if you like action games, you’ll likely be glad you added this one to your collection.

Pros:

+ Great dialogue
+ Unique gameplay with cool features

Cons:

- World is certainly large, almost too many things to do
- So-so graphics
