ProStroke Golf: World Tour 2007 Review for Xbox

While a number of golf games are available for the consoles, there is usually one that is mentioned above all others: Tiger Wood’s golf series. Today, we’ll look at a new golf game to hit the market: Gusto Games’ ProStroke Golf: World Tour 2007 for the Xbox. Will this game be on par with the other, more popular games on the market? The Story:

As with most sports games, ProStroke Golf: World Tour 2007 doesn’t have a story in the traditional sense. There are a few modes that the game offers, such as the usual quick play and career modes. In the career modes, you compete on the various golf courses against a variety of professionals. Along the way, you earn rewards as you complete tasks such as hitting a long putt. The game also allows you to design your own golf course, which is a slow process and not very interesting unless you’re a hard-core golf enthusiast.

According to the advertising for the game, ProStroke Golf 2007 was developed with the goal of creating the most realistic golf game available. Thus, you won’t see any flashy power ups, boost, or other fancy additions to make the game more fun. One obvious example of the game’s realism is the camera angles used; the first-person view is aimed at your feet, as opposed to the more traditional “caddie’s view” from behind.

Unlike most golf games, swinging the club uses a left-right motion of the right analog stick, as opposed to an up-down swing. I found the swing to be difficult to master, which perhaps was the game designer’s intent. Along with swinging the club, you have control of the golfer’s feet with the left analog stick, allowing you to shift weight. Plus, there are other things to worry about such as wrist position, club head position, and speed of the swing. Overall, I thought the gameplay was a little too realistic for my taste, as I often got impatient and simply swung at the ball. However, if you enjoy the physics of the golf game, you might find the game to have the right amount of realism.

Putting is also realistic; with the only aid to the player is a grid that helps in reading the greens. There isn’t a caddie telling you where to aim or a pointer telling you where the ball will be headed. Instead, you have to read the green yourself and determine the right amount of spin and power to apply. For me, I could never quite get the hang of putting either.

The Graphics:

ProStroke Golf doesn’t boast impressive graphics, with plain-looking characters and golf courses. The grass textures weren’t very detailed and the text was too small and hard to read. Also, I didn’t like that the camera stays on the player after the ball is stuck, as opposed to following the ball as it flies through the air. It’s too bad the designers didn’t spend as much time on the graphics as they did the gameplay.

The Audio:

The audio in ProStroke Golf was not noteworthy at all. There is no music, and the audio commentary was a little dry yet informative at times.

Conclusion:

ProStroke Golf: World Tournament 2007 does accomplish its goal as being one of the most realistic golf games made for the console. It offers a unique gameplay experience when compared to other games. However, the gameplay is the only strong part of the game; the other aspects aren’t as well done. If you are a true golf fan who is looking for a more realistic golf experience (including the long pauses between shots), this game might be just right for you. However, if you are just a casual fan looking for a more video-game like experience, you’ll probably be better off playing that golf game with a “Tiger” on the cover.
