Gauntlet Seven Sorrow for Xbox

Before the variety of adventure/RPG games such as Baldur’s Gate, Halo, etc, there was one game that I enjoyed spending hours in the arcade and at home playing: Gauntlet. The original game had a simple premise that worked well. Today we’ll look at the Midway’s latest offering in the series, Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows for the Xbox. How will this game compare with some of the latest offerings? Let’s find out.

About Gauntlet Seven Sorrow:

The Story:

Seven Sorrows follows the adventures of four warriors (since this is Gauntlet, you have the warrior, valkyrie, wizard, and elf) as they seek to avenge the past betrayal of the Emperor by his six advisors. That single sentence really about sums up the game’s story; there’s not much more to it. Basically, the story translates into the fact that you’ll face 7 different bosses on the way to “alleviating” the emperor’s sorrows. As I progressed through the game, I found myself to be less and less interested in the story, often choosing to skip the cut scenes in the beginning.

The Gameplay:

Despite being underwhelmed by the story, I had hoped that the frantic combat style that the original Gauntlet popularized before would be back. My hopes were partly fulfilled. On a positive note, Seven Sorrows does have the typical hack-n-slash appeal of the earlier versions. There are plenty of enemies to kill and generators to destroy, with different attack combos available at your disposal. However, Seven Sorrows lacked any original gameplay aspects that would make it stand apart from other games. The game is very linear, with usually a single path to take and straightforward objectives. Oh, did I mention that I beat the game in about 4 hours?

There are basically three attacks that every character gets: a long range attack, a close range/hand-to-hand attack, and a magic blast/attack. Each character excels at different attacks: for example, the warrior has excellent close range attack ability yet weak long range attacks, yet the elf has strong long range attacks yet weaker close range attack. Unfortunately, there is no character customization in the beginning; you can’t even change their color. Also, what happened to all the characters that Dark Legacy introduced, such as dwarf and the sorceress, or the hidden characters?

As you kill things, you gain experience points that allow you to level up. As you level and also pick up gold, you can purchase increased abilities or combo attacks. Unfortunately, here is another place where Seven Sorrows falls short. I was able to purchase all my upgrades about halfway through the game, rendering gold useless and dramatically limiting the replayability. Previous versions (such as Gauntlet: Dark Legacy) allowed you to purchase other upgrades such as additional health, potions, special shots, etc- this version lacked any of those upgardes. Unfortunately, this is another example where the game fell short of expectations.

While Seven Sorrows can be played solo, the game gets a little more interesting when you play in the multiplayer mode (either from a single console or on Xbox-live). While there’s only a cooperative mode available, traveling through the levels with your buddies adds to the game’s appeal, especially if you’re looking to just pick up a controller and start mashing away without much thought or skill.

The Graphics:

The graphics in Seven Sorrows are adequate though not impressive. The environments are drawn with a fair amount of detail. There is a wide variety of enemies to look at before you kill them, though the bosses weren’t very artistic (or hard to kill). I was a little disappointed in the character graphics, as the armor and weapons fail to stand out. Also, the attacks are lacking any of the gory details that other games such as God of War offer.

The Audio:

The audio in Seven Sorrows is not ground-breaking at all. The background music was repetitive, and the voice alerts were more annoying than informative. While the original sayings are back, such as “Warrior needs food, badly”, they seem primitive and repetitive for today’s games.

Conclusion:

Despite wanting to like this game more than most, I found Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows to be disappointing, failing to improve upon the tried formula of the original or even later versions of Gauntlet. While the game is enjoyable and fun to play with others, overall the game’s shortfalls prevent Seven Sorrows from standing out. This game is probably best suited as a rental, to be enjoyed with some friends looking for some easy gaming action.

Pros:

+ Fun multiplayer action
+ Enjoyable hack-n-slash action

Cons:

- Uninteresting story
- Short game with limited replayability
- Character customization lacking
- Plain audio
