Fifa 2007 for Xbox
In the mood to play some soccer but don’t want to do all the running? EA Sports, well-known makers of various sports games, has come out with their latest soccer offering, FIFA 07. Today we’ll look at the Xbox version of the game. Read on to find out if they’ve scored a goal or merely hit the crossbar.

The Story:

In FIFA 07, it’s definitely evident that soccer is a global sport, as you have access to over 500 teams from 27 leagues from 20 different countries. The game has the usual types of modes common for sports games: play it now, season play, etc. There is also an interesting “manager mode” that allows you to manage a team and all the problems associated with one such as salary, player performance, the press, etc. FIFA 07 also offers an online interactive league that lets you play with anyone one-on-one (sorry no co-op mode) over Xbox Live.

The Gameplay:

Gameplay FIFA 07 is much improved over previous versions that I’ve played, with a fairly simple interface that makes the game challenging yet not overly difficult. The game offers a variety of camera angles that allow you to zoom in or out of the action and a small player map that displays the location of all your teammates. Gameplay is enhanced by the trick plays using the right analog stick. Using the stick, you get to do some fancy footwear tricks to elude a defender or create an opening; thankfully these tricks don’t take over the game but rather add to the fun.

Passes in FIFA 07 are crisp and simple, but I found shooting to be a bit more challenging; as it’s hard to aim the ball, since there are no cursors or targets to move before you strike the ball. Set plays are also hard to execute successfully; maybe it’s just me, but I wish that soccer games would take a cue from games like Madden and allow you to draw up your set play beforehand.
The game UI plays tough yet fair, with defenders that are difficult to shake and goalies that are hard to beat. Overall, I thought the gameplay was pretty authentic.

The Graphics:

FIFA 07 graphics are decent though nothing was too impressive. The stadiums all looked great and the real-time play was detailed and crisp. However, the cut scenes appeared a little “blurry” to me, and I thought the facial expressions of the characters were plain.
The Audio:
The audio in FIFA 07 was also well-done, with loud crowds and a good set of commentators that weren’t boring and actually had some good advice now and then. The soundtrack got a little repetitive at times but wasn’t too distracting.
Conclusion:
FIFA 07 from EA Sports is another quality sport title that should satisfy most soccer fans. The wide variety of teams and challenges make the game fun to play again and again, and the realistic gameplay provide for a challenging experience. If you enjoy playing soccer games, I suggest you give FIFA 07 a try.
Pros:
+ Crazy amount of teams
+ Solid gameplay with fun trick feature
+ Authentic UI
Cons:
- Shooting isn’t easy
- Graphics are a little “blurry”
