Burnout Revenge for Xbox
Ever frustrated by car-racing games that require lots of practice and are too realistic for their own good? Would you rather crash into things at high speeds and get scored based on the amount of damage you inflict on other cars? If so, Electronic Arts’ Burnout Series might be just for you. Their latest offering, Burnout Revenge, puts you behind the wheel of a variety of cars to complete a series of driving challenges around the world. Does the game crash and burn overall? Burnout Revenge, like most car-racing games, doesn’t have a storyline or characters. The single-player game is divided into 169 different challenges/events, where you complete various objectives to earn gold/silver/bronze medals. Each event is designed in one of several different event styles or modes. The basic race mode puts you against 5 other computer-controlled cars racing to the finish line. Along the way, you have the ability to “takedown” cars by bumping them into walls/stairs/other cars, landing on top of them, blowing up in front of them, etc. If your car gets “taken down”, the offending car becomes your revenge rival, and you get additional rewards for taking him down. There are many other racing modes such as the eliminator, where every 30 seconds the last place car gets eliminated, and the road rage, where you try to hit as many cars as you can before the time expires.
There is also a split-screen and Xbox-live multiplayer modes available. The split screen allows you to play side-by-side in trying to crash into each other. The Xbox live/online mode allows you to compete with up to 5 online drivers in most of the race types. The online play is pretty enjoyable as well, with a ranking system and ability to form parties.

However, I think the most enjoyable events are the ones in Crash Mode, which are more like puzzles than races. In this mode, you drive your car into what is known as a “crash junction”, which you can think of as a busy intersection where a lot of cars are going to crash into each other. Your mission is to bring your car up to full speed and figure out how to crash the car in such as way as to cause the most damage possible by causing a massive pileup. These crash events are what make Burnout Revenge stand apart from other games.

As you progress through the events, you’ll get equipped with more cars to race and more tracks to compete on. Also, as you finish the events and complete challenges, you earn stars that allow you to access different race locations. Sounds somewhat complicated, but overall it’s pretty easy to figure out.

The gameplay in Burnout Revenge is pretty intense yet enjoyable. The cars themselves are easy to control, with automatic transmissions and bodies that most of the time are undamaged by crashes. Increasing the car’s speed is the boost meter. As you race and show your skills in drifting, checking other cars, or even in boosting itself, you earn more boost. Even while boosting, the car is pretty easy to control; I had little trouble taking turns or aiming for other cars at 200 miles per hour. Turns are well-illustrated with a series of bright yellow arrows that also serve as “walls” to prevent you from overshooting the turn. While driving purists might frown upon such unrealistic driving physics, it makes for a more playable game.
The beginning of the game is a little too easy to complete; I typically was able to finish each race the first or second time I completed it. The later races become more difficult as the speeds increase and the rival cars become smarter. The game has high replay value; even after completing a race, I often retried it to increase my medal or score. However, I wish there could have been a separate series that only involved Crash events, since as I mentioned that was my favorite part of the game.

The graphics in Burnout Revenge are very well done, with amazing attention to detail on and well-drawn tracks. The cars are drawn beautifully, with a wide variety of cool-looking designs. The tracks convey a sense of realism and are full of detail. As you race around the tracks, the blurring of the screen really conveys a sense of speed, adding to the intensity of the game. And the crashes- wow. The interesting camera angles, bright explosions, and slow-motion detail were a joy to watch. Overall, the graphics are some of the best I’ve seen in a racing game and add to the experience.
