Black for Xbox

One of the most popular types of video game style nowadays is the first-person shooter. Given its popularity, it’s hard for a game maker to distinguish themselves against such strict competition as the Halo 2, Splinter Cell, etc. Electronic Arts has released a game simply named “Black” that puts you right in the middle of story of covert military operations. Let’s see if Black stands out against other shooters.

In Black, you are following the adventures of solider named Keller, who is a member of a covert black-operations team known as Black. Throughout the game, we follow Keller’s quest to hunt down the leader of a terrorist organization known as the Seventh Wave. We aren’t given all the pieces to the story puzzle right off the bat, which aids to the black-ops feel of the game. The story unwraps itself through a series of live-action flashbacks in between the missions. While the story is somewhat confusing, it doesn’t get in the way of the gameplay and adds to the overall experience

The real strength of Black is the gameplay itself. The missions are divided several primary objectives that are straightforward and a few secondary objectives along the way. But the main objective of Black can be summarized simply as: kill or blow up everything in sight. Throughout the mission, you are given the usual variety of weapons such as pistols, shotguns, automatic weapons, RPGs, etc, and a bunch of enemies to kill.

There is rarely a shortage of weapons or ammo available, as well as first aid kits and health packs to keep you going. The environment is also very interactive. You can see every bullet hole and can destroy most things such as buildings, windows, cars, etc. The enemy solders aren’t equipped with the most sophisticated AI ever developed, although they do try to hide every now and then from the barrage of bullets you send their way. Overall, Black plays more intensely than most shooters out there.

Unfortunately, the one thing that I found missing from Black is that there is no multiplayer or online mode. While I enjoy the solo gameplay, what would have kept this game in my Xbox for weeks/months would have been a multiplayer, or even a player-vs-player mode.

The Graphics:

The graphics in the Black were pretty impressive; for a minute I thought I was playing an Xbox 360 game. The environments are well drawn and provide a sense of realism, and the explosions looked pretty realistic. The lighting is fluid and well-done, and the level of detail is high. The only thing I found annoying was the fact that every time you reload, things in the distance become blurry while you reload. While this was probably put in place to aid in the realism, it was a little hard on my eyes.



The Audio:

While I don’t typically pay attention to the audio, Black does offer a rich sound experience that really puts you in the middle of the action. The gunshots and explosions sound amazing, and the musical score and live-action audio were definitely high quality and aid to the game’s intense feel.

Conclusion:

Black really stands out in the crowd as a great first-person shooter for the Xbox and PS2. The game really packs a ton of features such as great gameplay, quality story, and amazing audio. While I still would have wanted a multiplayer mode to add to the long-term playability, this game still delivery a fantastic game experience. Overall, I would rate this game a 5 out of 5.
