Wii WarioWare Smooth Moves Review

Wario, the infamous Nintendo character that has shown up in a number of games, is back once again, this time to tackle the Nintendo Wii in the game WarioWare Smooth Moves. This time, he’s back with a large cast of characters and an even larger set of minigames that attempt to take advantage of the Wii’s unique game play. Will the latest Wario adventure live up to his famous name? Read on to find out more in today’s video game review.

The Story:

The premise behind WarioWare: Smooth Moves for the Wii isn’t really about the story; it’s about the series of short challenges, or minigames, that follow each story line. Each set of minigames is based on one of the game’s characters, such as Wario himself, Mona, Jimmy T, etc. As you complete each set of minigames, new characters/sets become available. Overall, I thought the story was cute but not really necessary; they almost feel like a gimmick to get you to play the minigames.

The Gameplay:

Gameplay is really where WarioWare: Smooth Moves excels as a game. Most of the minigames involve a creative use of the Wii Remote, which is referred in the game as the “Form Baton”. I thought I had seen most of the ways to hold the remote, but after being exposed to such remote positions (or Forms) as the Umbrella, the Waiter, and the Elephant, I was proven wrong. The game uses both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk at times. Most of the games were fun to play, especially in the multiplayer modes.

The minigames themselves have a wide variety of challenges. Most of them are very short (almost “micro games”) and involve performing a quick task. There are also boss stages, which are longer games, and endurance stages, which have no time limit.

Progress is made in the game by the number of minigames you complete. Each set of minigames is based on the character’s theme. Overall, the minigames are fun to play and easy to learn.

From a graphics perspective, WarioWare: Smooth Moves offers a colorful visual experience that flows well. The animations are cartoon-like and add to the atmosphere of the game. The minigames themselves have cute effects as well that are easy on the eyes. While there are times when the graphics seem rather plain, overall, I found the graphics to be fun and vibrant.

The Audio:

The audio in WarioWare: Smooth Moves is as varied as the minigames you play; the sound is a little crazy at times and adds to the frenzied pace of the game. The soundtrack is a kind of strange as well. But despite its quirkiness, I thought the sound added to the fun of the game itself and was pretty solid.

Conclusion:

WarioWare: Smooth Moves for the Nintendo Wii is a solid game that would be a great addition to your game collection. While the single player mode is great, the multiplayer mode is where the game really shines, and its wide variety of content will have you playing this game for hours. Don’t expect an gritty, drawn-out gaming experience along the lines of Zelda or Kingdom of Hearts; instead, be ready for a fun, fast-paced, and intense burst of energy coming from your Wii.

Pros:

+ Great gameplay with unique controller moves
+ Fun in single player and great in multiplayer modes
+ Quirky yet interesting graphics and sound
+ Tons of minigames

Cons:

- Not much of a story
- Multiplayer mode only accessible after beating single player
