Wii Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 Review

When I first saw the Wii remote, the first thing I thought of was how great it would be to play a golf game using the motion-sensing remote that you can grip like a golf club. Fast forward to today, where Tiger Woods has put his name on one of the early golfing games for the Wii, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 from EA Sports. Will this golf game turn out to be the next generation of video golfing games? Read on to find out.

The Story:

As with most sports games, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 doesn’t have a story in the traditional sense. In its place, the game offers a wide variety of golfing experiences, such as the usual quick play and career modes as well as interesting “arcade” modes. In the career modes, you compete on the various golf courses against a variety of professionals. Along the way, you earn dollars for winning events and performing feats such as long drives, putts, etc. You can purchase equipment and also customize your character’s strengths along the way. The arcade mode has a bunch of interesting challenges such as target practice. Overall, I found the large number of different games to be one of the strengths of this game.

The Gameplay:

As I mentioned in the introduction, the one aspect of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 that I was eager to try out was the gameplay using the Wii Remote. Golf seems like a perfect sport that would translate well to the Wii console. Overall, I thought the gameplay was realistic and accurate. Though at times it can be a little too realistic; having some golf experience/practice does help. From a fun standpoint, I found that the interface in the golf game in Wii Sports to be a little more enjoyable. Though there is definitely more to do in this game, such as adding spin to the ball in mid-air and putting a punch, loft, or flat stroke on the ball.

Putting was actually more difficult for me than hitting the ball in the air. The game does provide a putting aid to the player in the form of a grid that helps in reading the greens. However, for some reason I could never quite get enough power behind my long putts, and they often misfired. I’m not sure if it was me or not, but I tried a number of different techniques and never could quite master the long putts. But the short putts were easier to hit and make.

The Graphics:

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 has decent yet not overly impressive graphics, with plain-looking characters and golf courses. The grass textures are fairly detailed and the text was too small and hard to read.

The Audio::

The audio in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 was pretty much as to be expected, similar to other Tiger Woods offerings. The audio commentary was a little dry yet informative at times.

Conclusion:

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 for the Wii is a good title that comes close to being a very good translation of a sport into a video game. It offers a wide variety of golfing challenges that can be played quickly or for extended periods depending on your mood. However, the gameplay wasn’t as strong as it could have been; as long putts and hitting out of the rough seemed random. But overall, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is a decent golf title that is worthy of a try, especially if you’re a golf fan.

Pros:

+ Realistic gameplay
+ Wide variety of golfing challenges
+ Decent graphics
+ Good audio commentary

Cons:

- Difficult putting, especially at long distances
- Gameplay a little too difficult at times
