Wii Rayman Raving Rabbids Review
Things are changing here at rbconsoles.com, as we have recently obtained a next-generation console, the Nintendo Wii. This groundbreaking system offers a unique controller interface and a variety of new games to the scene. We start off our coverage of the Wii by looking at one of the early titles, Rayman Raving Rabbids from Ubisoft. Will this wacky game take full advantage of the Wii’s capabilities and provide good entertainment? That is what we’re here to find out in this review.

The Story:

The premise behind the story mode in Rayman Raving Rabbids is both funny and a tad disturbing at the same time. In this installment of the Rayman series, Rayman, along with a few of his little frog friends, are kidnapped by a group of bunnies, or rabbids, during a nice picnic. These rabbits force Rayman to complete a series of tasks for their entertainment. Each day, Rayman must complete 3 tasks plus one boss-like trail in order to receive a plunger, which eventually allows him to escape from his captors. As you complete days, you also unlock the ability to play these tasks in the score mode. Overall, I thought the story was unique and was an interesting way to thread together a bunch of minigames, but the game really isn’t about the story.

The Gameplay:

Gameplay in Rayman Raving Rabbids does take full advantage of the Wii’s innovative, motion-sensing controllers, showcasing both the Wii remote and the Wii Nunchuk. Each minigame requires a different use of the controllers, from aiming/shooting to dancing to drawing objects on the screen (similar to the game Okami). Each minigame is easy to learn yet challenging enough to master, making this game’s replayability strong.

The variety of the minigames is the game’s main strength. I’m not sure where the game designers come up with such concepts as cow throwing, closing bathroom stalls on rabbits, or hitting them over the head as you dance to pop music , but for some reason they work and bring a smile to the player’s faces. Most of the appeal of the story mode is unlocking the new games and then being able to play/master them in score mode.

While the actual gameplay is one of the game’s strengths, I thought the scoring and unlocking of the various challenges in score mode could use some refinement. As you complete tasks, you earn points, accumulating up to 1000 points, and achieving such a score was hard to figure out. Plus, the rewards for the score mode (bonus tracks and videos) don’t seem like very worthy rewards. Also, I thought the multiplayer mode could use more refinement; I would have liked to have seen more cooperative play and also a way to choose a series of challenges to complete instead of picking them one at a time.
The Graphics:

The graphics in Rayman Raving Rabbids are solid, despite the lack of 480p for this title. The characters are drawn with good detail and a sense of humor; these are some of the oddest-looking rabbits I’ve ever seen. The backgrounds and special effects are colorful and add to the game’s playful mood. Kids will certainly enjoy the cartoon-like appearance of the game.
The Audio:
Similarly, the audio in Rayman Raving Rabbids is fun and adds to the overall sense of whimsy in the game. While there is no dialogue, the sound effects are self-explanatory and are humorous. The background music is based on current pop songs and adds to the overall atmosphere.
Conclusion:
Overall, Rayman Raving Rabbids by Ubisoft for the Nintendo Wii is a great game that showcases the Wii’s capabilities in a fun, light-hearted way. There’s a wide variety of simple yet challenging gameplay aspects, and the story and graphics/audio enhance the experience. While I thought there could be some improvements, including the score mode and the multiplayer aspects, this is a great title to add to your Wii library.

+ Fun story (yet a little demented)
+ Great gameplay showcasing Wii’s control system
+ Solid graphics
+ Pleasant audio
+ Variety of challenges/minigames
Cons:
- Multiplayer mode could use some improvements
- Score mode not very intuitive
