Wii Monster 4x4: World Circuit Game Review

Something about the Nintendo Wii must bring out the creative side of game designers. An example of this phenomenon is the concept behind the Nintendo Wii game Elebits. Where does an idea for an Elebit come from, and who makes up a whole game about them? While we might never know the answer to that question, someone made it happen, and we’re here to see if the originality paid off. Read on to find out more in today’s game review.

The Story:

As with most racing games, Monster 4x4: World Circuit doesn’t have a story but rather is comprised of a series of racing circuits set around the world. In each race, you are behind the wheel of a large “monster” truck/car, which basically is a car with humongous tires. As you complete each circuit, you unlock the next circuit and so on. Along the way, you earn upgrades for your monster truck or different monster trucks.

There are quite a few tracks to compete on, but after a while they all felt somewhat the same. I would have liked to have seen some really wild course design and the presence of secondary cars that you can smash the truck into or drive over.

The Gameplay:

Like the previously reviewed game Excite Truck, Monster 4x4: World Circuit turns your Wii controller sideways, making it a steering wheel. Steering involves the same steering motion as driving a car, and the gas/brake are the 1 or 2 buttons respectively on the controller. Unlike Excite Truck, the orientation of the controller allows you to use an optional steering wheel. While a novel idea, the steering wheel isn’t necessary but adds to the fun factor.

I found the steering in the game to be challenging yet easy to pick up. There is a tendency to over steer the trucks, but for the most part turns are easy to maneuver through without too much acrobatics. There are jumps in the game, where you earn nitro bonuses by doing aerial tricks, and also various power-ups that can be used to slow down your opponents.

Along with the single-player world circuit mode, the game also has a multiplayer mode which supports a total of 4 players. I’m glad that the designers allowed a 4-player mode; I think this is the only racing game for the Wii that supports that many players. Since I enjoy playing my Wii with a group of friends, this feature alone makes the game stand out in the crowd.

The Graphics:

The graphics in Monster 4x4: World Circuit are relatively plain compared to cool-looking driving games like Gran Turismo or Burnout. While the trucks look cool, the game lacks any cool effects. Missing are any destruction effects or nice boost graphics. The tracks have the occasional nice feature, but overall they all pretty much look alike.



The Audio:

Monster 4x4: World Circuit has a decent soundtrack that has a decidedly punk-rock sound to it, but after a while it got a little annoying. Too many guitar solos. But the trucks sound good.

Conclusion:

Overall, I thought Monster 4x4: World Circuit for the Nintendo Wii is an average game that fails to bring anything new to the racing genre. While the controls are fun and the presence of 4-player multiplayer mode is a definite plus, the game suffers from a lackluster presentation. But if you’re a fan of monster trucks or just want to try your racing skills against three of your friends, this game is worthy of a rental or picking up on sale.

+ Offers 4-player simultaneous action

Cons:

- Repetitive gameplay
- Boring graphics
- Few special effects
- Annoying soundtrack
