Wii Excite Truck Review

Back in the days of the original Nintendo system, one of the more popular titles was Excite Bike, where you maneuvered your motorcycle through a variety of jumps and obstacles. Fast forward a few years to today, where Nintendo and Monster Games bring out a new title in the Excite series: Excite Truck for the Wii. Will this game capture the fun of the classic in the new Wii console? Let’s find out.

The Story:

Excite Truck for the Wii has a fairly simple premise with no story. Basically, you complete a series of challenges to unlock more tracks and other challenges. Upon completing challenges, you also unlock the ability to drive different trucks, each with their own set of strength/weaknesses. While the concept is straightforward, I would have liked to have seen a little more customization available in the game, such as being able to earn upgrades to existing cars and a ranking system.

The Gameplay:

Gameplay in Excite Truck utilizes the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote to control the truck. The game does not use the Nunchuk at all. Unlike other titles such as Wii Sports, controlling the action involves holding the Wii remote in two hands like a normal controller. To steer, simply tilt the controller left and right. Brake and gas are applied using the 1 and 2 buttons, and the turbo is activated using the directional pad. Controls were very responsive, and at times were a little too responsive, as the trucks can be easily oversteered. Also, one of the downsides to the game’s controls is that you can’t use the Wii steering wheel accessory offered with other games.

In Excite Truck, the goal for each race isn’t necessarily to finish first, but rather to earn stars. Stars are earned by finishing ahead of others, but they can also be easily earned by doing a variety of tricks/skills such as drift turns, big air, maneuvering through trees, and jumping through rings. While I was a little disappointed to find out that racing wasn’t the goal, but in the end it probably works out better because the controls are difficult to master. Crashes are a very frequent occurrence, disrupting the overall flow of the game. Along with the single player mode, the game offers a two-player versus mode, but no four player action for this game.

The Graphics:

Graphics in Excite Truck are adequate but nothing extraordinary. The trucks themselves are drawn nicely, but I thought the environments were average but nothing special. I would have liked to have seen better crash effects or other nice special effects to make things really “exciting”.

The Audio:

One nice feature of Excite Truck is that you can play your own music tracks stored on a SD card instead of the listening to the game’s audio soundtrack. I enjoyed listening to my own tracks; it somehow made crashing less frustrating. The game’s soundtrack was decent though a little repetitive at times.



Conclusion:

Excite Truck for the Nintendo Wii is an entertaining and challenging title that unfortunately falls short in a couple of areas. While I enjoyed the gameplay, I thought the game was too simplistic and lacked features offered in other racing titles such as truck customization. Also, the controls were a little too sensitive at times, making the car difficult to handle and crashes frequent. Overall, the game is worthy of a try if you enjoy truck racing but falls short of being a top-notching racing title

+ Variety of challenges and race tracks
+ Can play your own audio tracks

Cons:

- No truck customization
- Hard to control the truck and easily crashed
- Basic racing title
- Not compatible with Wii steering wheel
- No 4 player mode
