Wii Elebits Review
Something about the Nintendo Wii must bring out the creative side of game designers. An example of this phenomenon is the concept behind the Nintendo Wii game Elebits. Where does an idea for an Elebit come from, and who makes up a whole game about them? While we might never know the answer to that question, someone made it happen, and we’re here to see if the originality paid off. Read on to find out more in today’s game review.

The Story:

The story behind the Elebits for the Wii is fairly simple yet still original. This fairy tale story is set in a different time/world, where the people in the world receive their energy from creatures called, you guessed it, Elebits. The heroine in the story, Kai, claims to hate Elebits, as they take all of her scientist parents’ attention away from her as they study the Elebits. Then, one day the world goes dark, as the Elebits basically go “on strike”. Kai’s job is to find and trap all the Elebits using her trusty “Capture Gun”, restoring power to various objects along the way. The game’s story is definitely unique, but honestly it doesn’t really add to the gaming experience at all. Rather, it merely serves to somehow explain why you are playing the game.

The Gameplay:

Elebits offers both a story mode and a multiplayer mode; as expected, you can unlock levels as you progress through the modes and can replay any along the way. Each level has basically the same objective; capture enough energy in the form of Elebits in a given time period and location. The Elebits are obviously not in plain sight, but rather you have to find them by picking up and moving objects around. As you gain energy, you are able to “energize” certain appliances/objects, which draw out more Elebits. Overall, I thought the story mode was somewhat repetitive, but the multiplayer mode was definitely more interesting. Up to 4 players can play cooperatively at a time, with everyone trying to hunt down as many Elebits as possible. I think the multiplayer mode is the star of the game by far.

Like many of the initial games I’ve seen for the Wii, Elebits once again takes advantage of the innovative controller of the Wii. This game uses both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk, and the controls are very intuitive, easy to learn, and fun. The environment is very interactive; almost everything can be moved or altered in some way. The camera is also very easy to move around and adjust, making the gameplay very smooth and fluid.

The Graphics:

The graphics in Elebits are adequate yet nothing too spectacular. The environments are certainly drawn well, with much attention to detail. The visual effects are solid, and the characters have the look of a cartoon series. But I didn’t notice anything that made me say “wow”.

The Audio:
Elebits supports some fairly basic audio; there is hardly any dialogue in the game, and the sound effects are average but do the job. Nothing really stood out to me in terms of music or effects.
Conclusion:
Elebits for the Nintendo Wii is an entertaining game that has great controls and offers a good multiplayer experience. However, the game does fall short in a couple of areas that are hard to look past. The game does get repetitive after a while, and the story really didn’t capture my imagination the way I thought it could. Overall, this game is certainly worth renting to try out, especially if you’re friends are coming over and want to try out some of the Wii’s capabilities.

+ Great multiplayer mode
+ Interactive environment
Cons:
- Repetitive gameplay
- Boring in solo/story mode
- Unique yet basic story
- Average sound/graphics
