Urban Chaos: Riot Response for Playstation 2

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a riot cop in a city in complete chaos? Eidos, makers of such games as Tome Raider and Deus Ex, and Rocksteady attempt to recreate that feeling with the game Urban Chaos: Riot Response. Let’s see how the PS2 version looks in today’s featured video game review.

The Story:

In Urban Chaos: Riot Response, you are Nick Mason, a member of an elite anti-gang police squad known as T-Zero. T-Zero’s mission is to battle the evil gang known as the Burners, a bunch of hockey-masked terrorists bent on throwing the city into chaos. Sure, T-Zero’s tactics are a little extreme, but they get the job done. Along the way, you get help from a variety of civilians, emergency medical technicians, and firefighters. Overall, I thought the story was a little over-the-top and unrealistic.

Like many other games of this style, Urban Chaos is broken up in to a series of missions, each broken up into a series of mini-objectives. The mini-objectives make the game pretty linear; the objectives are straightforward and pretty hard to miss. As you progress, you’ll run into other non-player characters (NPC) that you’ll need help from in order to complete the mission. I thought the game designers did a good job of incorporating the NPC “buddy system”, where you are able to give orders to the NPC to do certain tasks.

As you complete the missions, you gain upgraded weapons, ammo, etc. as you earn medals and complete certain goals, such as 20 headshots or capturing a gang leader alive. The goals enhance the replayability of the game and provide enough challenge to make them interesting.

Control of the character was pretty smooth. Urban Chaos is a first person shooter (FPS), and the controls were easy. I liked how you select weapons, and the camera motion was smooth. There is a wide variety of weapons, both sophisticated and “old-school”, such as cleavers and Molotov cocktails. To give you that true “riot police” feel, you are also equipped with a riot shield that becomes an essential part of the game. The shield sounds lame but is actually pretty fun to use and makes the gameplay somewhat unique.



The Graphics:

I found the graphics in Urban Chaos to be adequate but not too impressive. The weapons are well-drawn and the environments had a decent amount of detail. However, the enemies looked odd to me; they seemed to be based on a bad horror flick or something. After a while, they all started looking alike. The game also has good slow-motion camera action, which allows you to watch all your headshots in their gory detail.

The Audio:

Urban Chaos has a decent soundtrack, with a slight “urban” feel to it. The voice-over acting is solid, despite a few one-liners that are repetitive and a little too vulgar for my taste. But overall the sound work was well-done.

Conclusion:

Urban Chaos: Riot Response isn’t the next Grand Theft Auto series, but it is a solid game that has enough unique features to make it a rather fun game. Despite a few negatives, I thought the overall gameplay and game design were solid and unique. Combined with a good reward/challenge system and assortment of weapons, this game is definitely one to try out if you’re a FPS fan.

+ Good mission design
+ Smooth character control
+ Good replayability

Cons:

- Over-the-top story
- Odd looking enemies
