Okami for Playstation 2

Ever played a game where the main character was a wolf? The PS2 game Okami, made by Clover Studios and distributed by Capcom, follows the adventure of a wolf-bodied god as she fights evil forces. Read on to find out if this game is all bark or if it has some bite to it.

The Story:

Okami takes place in an ancient time set in feudal Japan. A small village called Kamiki Village was placed under a curse by the legendary monster Orochi, whose curse eventually spread over all the lands and turned daylight into night. There is one hope however, the majestic, wolf-bodied sun god Amaterasu, who defeated Orochi once before but is back to do battle again.

The story-telling in the game is one of its main strengths. The story is full of Japanese folklore and is well-crafted. The game spends a lot of time developing the wonderful story; it almost feels like you’re watching a well-done anime.

In Okami, you are in control of the wolf-bodied god Amaterasu as she travels throughout Japan on her quest to purify the land and defeat Orochi. This main mission is broken into multiple sub-missions, which in turn has a number of side quests and other things to keep you occupied. Most of the missions (in fact the entire game) aren’t very difficult once you figure out what needs to be done, as there are a lot of puzzle-based challenges in the game. As you progress, you earn more weapons, items, and abilities to help in your quest.

Amaterasu is equipped with a variety of weapons/abilities, but the main one, which is also the most unique weapon I’ve ever seen, is the Celestial Brush. The brush, which is kind of hard to explain, is a god-like power where you are able to alter your surroundings simply by painting them. Sounds odd, but amazingly the brush techniques are cool to use and work well in the game. There are 13 brush techniques in all, and finding a new one is a rewarding gameplay experience.

The graphics in Okami are amazing; some of the best for the PS2 I’ve ever seen. Amaterasu’s movements are fluid and graceful, and the scenery is detailed and well-done. The cut scenes are also well-done and make you feel like you are watching a top-quality anime. Overall, the game has a very artistic quality to it which is enhanced by the great graphics.

The Audio:

Okami’s audio, while not quite as stunning as the graphics, is still top-notch. Although there are no voices (all the dialogue is sort of blurred/mumbled), the sound effects are crisp and the music adds to the ambiance of the game, making you feel like part of the world.



Conclusion:

Okami for the PS2 is one of those rare games that completely grabs your attention and takes you on a fantastic journey. The original gameplay, top-notch graphics, and story all make this game stand out amongst the crowd. While the game might be a little easy and some of the puzzles tedious, don’t let those little nits stop you from playing this game. I suspect you’ll be comparing other games to this one for a long time.

Pros:

+ Very well-crafted story
+ Fantastic graphics
+ Unique gameplay

Cons:

- A little on the easy side
- Puzzles can be frustrating at times
