God of War for Playstation 2
The adventure game God of War for the PS2 has been hailed as one of the best adventure games ever made for the PS2. The game certainly has the makeup of a winner, with an interesting story and dance-like combat system. With God of War 2 coming out in Spring 2007, we take a look at the original to see if it’s all hype or the real deal.

God of War is set in the time of Greek mythology. You play Kratos, who was sent by God of War, Ares, to command the Spartan army and ruthlessly conquer lands. Driven by a lust for power, he becomes the ultimate killing machine. However, after all that killing, he is haunted by dreams and visions of his past atrocities. Meanwhile, Ares has gone insane, and the other Olympian gods are commanded not to do act against Ares. Wishing to rid himself of the visions, Kratos makes a deal with Athena to kill Ares for the gods in exchange for a peaceful mind. Throughout the game, we learn about Kratos’ haunting past and how his quest turns out.
Overall, the story of the game is what I thought was its main strength. The story was a very compelling tale, and it’s told through a series of flashbacks that finally comes together in the end. This is one of the few games that you’ll actually look forward to watching the cut scenes.

Along with the story, God of War has a simple theme: kill everything in sight. Kratos is armed with a variety of weapons, with the main one being the Blade of Chaos, which is a dual-sword attached to his arms by chains. He is also gains other magical powers and weapons as you progress through the game. Along the way, you’ll be forced to solve a puzzle or two. The enemies are fun to kill, and each boss presents a unique challenge that almost feels like a puzzle at times. However, I wish there were more bosses to kill, as the boss fights really showcase the game’s strengths.

The Gameplay:

The combat system in God of War is very intuitive and almost dance-like, similar to the other games like Prince of Persia or Kingdom of Hearts 2. Using a combination of grapples and strong/medium attacks, there are endless ways in which to kill enemies. The game displays the number of hits you land consecutively; once you get the hang of it, you can rack up strings of hits in the tens or even hundreds. Pretty wild.
The only thing I thought distracted from the overall gameplay were the platforming and puzzles parts of the game. I spent a number of hours just trying to figure out where the next location was, often doubling back to the beginning of a level. While I understand trying to make the game not-so linear, I would have enjoyed it more had I not wasted time looking for that hidden door or secret.
The Graphics:

The graphics in God of War are, simply put, stunning. The level of detail in the scenery is top-notch and adds to the intense experience of the game. There is a wide variety of interesting-looking enemies from Greek mythology, all drawn with an edgy look. But the most visually impressive moments in the game occur when Kratos does what he does best- killing things. The combination moves are fast-paced and intricately drawn, and the gory detail is fantastic. If you like seeing blood and guts, this game is for you.
The Audio:
God of War has an original soundtrack that is as impressive as the graphics. The sounds remind me of the score from the movie Conan the Barbarian or Lord of the Rings. The voice-over acting is top-quality, and the sounds contribute to the overall mood of the game.
Conclusion:
God of War for the PS2 earns its reputation as one of the best adventure games ever made. The game is an example of how good the video game experience can be when you combine a movie-like story with a great combat system and throw in superior graphics and sound. If Sony continues where it left off in God of War 2, it will undoubtedly become another classic for the PS2.
Pros:
+ Compelling story
+ Great sound
+ Amazing graphics
+ Cool combat system and well-designed gameplay
Cons:
- Too few bosses
- Too many puzzles and frustrating platforming
