God Hand for Playstation 2
In a style reminiscent of old-fashioned fighting games like Kung Fu and Double Dragon, Capcom has released a game for the PS2 called God Hand. In it, you play a character through a wild-west type setting where your main weapon is, you guess it, your right hand with “god-like” powers. Read on to find out more about this unique game.

God Hand for the PS2 follows the story of Gene, a drifter who ran into trouble with a bunch of supernatural villains in an attempt to save a girl. Though he was able to save her, the bad guys proceed to cut off his right arm. Later, he awakes to find that his right arm has been replaced with the “God Hand”. Wielding it, he takes on the foes that are bent on obtaining the God Hand and causing trouble.
For some reason, the setting of the game reminded me of the Stephan King story “The Gunslinger”, except for the lack of guns and lighter, humorous at times, story. The game is divided into short missions where you battle a few enemies and progress in the storyline. There is only a single-player mode available, which was surprisingly quite challenging. I would have liked to have seen a multiplayer mode as well.

The Gameplay:

Gameplay in God Hand is a lot more complicated and technical than its appearance suggests. Combat is third-person hand-to-hand, though you pick up a variety of weapons along the way. You start off with a decent variety of punches and kicks, and you pick up a variety of new attacks along the way by either defeating enemies or purchasing them. The combat system is very customizable if you want it to be, as you can assign different attacks/combos to different button/joystick combinations. Or you can leave it alone and button-mash your way through the game, though you likely won’t enjoy it as much.

As you would expect, your “God Hand” is equipped with special powers to aid you in combat. As you build up energy by landing blows, your “tension meter” goes up and, at a certain point, the God Hand activates and renders you temporarily invincible and your punches/kicks faster. Also, you have a limited number of “roulette” attacks, where the game pauses and allows you to choose a special attack using the God Hand. While the God Hand was fun, I would have liked to have been able to use it more often, as it’s too easy to run out of special attacks and hard to regenerate them.

Along with the main mission, God Hand also has some interesting side games, including a full-blown casino equipped with gambling games such as video poker, blackjack, and slots. I was surprised to see the designers go so far with these side games, though it added to the “fun” environment of the game. Also, there is a fighting ring that allows you to test out your skills and combos.

The graphics of God Hand are a tale of two cities. On the positive note, the wild-west themed environments were drawn well, the characters had a nice-looking anime-like appearance. On the down side, the game often experienced graphical “glitches”, such as disappearing walls and other quirks.
The Audio:
God Hand likely won’t win any awards for having the best audio sound track, as I found the audio sound track, which sounds like a bad surfer movie, to be repetitive and annoying. However, the combat sound effects are decent and added to the game’s appeal.
Conclusion:
While God Hand for the PS2 isn’t one of the best games I’ve ever played, it certainly is an interesting title that keeps you entertained. The game has solid gameplay that is surprisingly technical, and the game is a challenging title. Though the game does have a couple of negatives, overall I’d say this game is worth your attention.

- No multiplayer mode
- Repetitive audio soundtrack
- Quirky, low quality graphics
- Button masher at times
