Bully Game Review for Playstation 2

Sure, you’ve probably played video games set in outer space, or in the jungle, or in some other exotic location. But have you ever played a game set in a school? In Rockstar’s game “Bully” for the PS2, you get to do just that: take control of a student in a tough environment known as a new school. Does the game make the grade? Let’s find out in today’s game review.

In Bully for the PS2, you are Jimmy Hopkins, a teenager who has been sent away to the Bullworth Academy by his new “loving” stepfather. Thrown into a tough situation with no friends, Jimmy is forced to learn how to deal with the new students, administration, and others at the school. As he gets to know people and gain a reputation, his ability to thrive in the situation comes through.

This game has received a lot of media attention who claim that the game is promoting bullying to children. Unlike the title suggests, the game is more than just bullying kids; in fact, bullying has very little to do with it. While Jimmy does get into his fair share of trouble, he’s more of a Bart Simpson-type character who is mischievous more than mean. Overall, I thought the story was definitely original and added to whole experience.

The gameplay in Bully reminded me a lot of the play in the famous Grand Theft Auto series, which isn’t surprising because they were both developed by Rockstar games. The world of Bullworth Academy is a open-ended world similar to Liberty City or other GTA settings, except the world is centered around the school itself. Since Jimmy is a student, he is faced with a large number of restrictions, such as when he’s supposed to go to class, eat lunch, etc. While breaking the rules is fairly easy, I found the constraints to be a little too restrictive at first, but after a while you get used to it. Along the way, you complete a number of small missions for rewards and power-up abilities. You also attend classes, which are really minigames that are actually challenging to complete.

Control of Jimmy is the typical third-person perspective and again is similar to GTA-style of games. Armed with a variety of weapons such as a slingshot, stink bombs, and your fists, the combat system works well and is more than just a button-mashing experience. Interacting with the characters in the game is also a unique experience, where you get to choose how you handle each situation (either fight, play nice, taunt, etc).

While Bully doesn’t break any new grounds when it comes to graphics, overall I thought the graphics were well-done and added to the experience. Bullworth Academy is drawn with good attention to detail, and the characters look good on the screen. The combat looks great and the cut scenes are also done nicely.

The Audio:

The soundtrack in Bully blended well with the game’s setting, and I didn’t find it repetitive at all. There is a ton of dialogue in the game (not including the stuff in the cut scenes) which is quite humorous at times, and the voice acting is top-quality.





Conclusion:

Don’t judge this book by its cover (or name in this case); Bully for the PS2 offers a very enjoyable and unique gaming experience that is actually suitable for all ages. Despite my preconceived notions based on what I heard about the game, I found the game to be not controversial at all. Instead, the game does a very good job of telling a realistic story and keeps you interested as it does. If you’re looking for a fresh game, I suggest you give this title a try.

Pros:

+ Solid story (don’t let the title turn you away)
+ Original title with lots to do
+ Good combat system
+ Detailed graphics and good cut scenes
+ Funny dialog

Cons:

- Takes a while to get used to the daily routine
