Xbox Battlefield 2 Modern Combat Review

Electronic Arts’ Battlefield series is one of the most successful PC game franchises ever created. Thus, it makes sense that they would try to port that success onto the console arena. Today we’ll take a look at their offering for the Xbox, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Read on to find out how this version rates.

The Story:

Like other games in the series, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat does offer a single-player mode, but this one is surprisingly interesting. In the single-player mode, you are placed in the middle of a modern-times war with an east vs. west flavor, where you get to play both sides in a variety of missions. The missions are fairly diverse, not just your typical capture the base or kill everything in sight. Many involve sabotage, recon, protection, etc. The single player mode was entertaining enough to keep you occupied and hone your Battlefield skills.

Battlefield games typically have strong gameplay, but I would rate Battlefield 2 Modern Combat’s gameplay as merely average when compared with other Xbox titles such as Halo 2, Black, and Ghost Recon. For some reason, I like playing Battlefield using a keyboard and a mouse, rather than a joystick. The controls were fluid and intuitive although somewhat slow. Overall, I had little trouble learning and feeling comfortable with them. One cool feature in the single-player mode is the “hot-swap” ability, where a single push of the Y button transports you away from your current body and allows you to take control of another teammate. This allows you to take on different roles in the battle and keeps the action fresh throughout the mission.

Another interesting aspect of the gameplay is the reward system. As you complete each mission, you earn points based on a set of measures (such as mission time, number of deaths, etc) and medals that allow you to achieve higher military ranks and have access to better equipment. I though the reward system was innovative and increased the replay-ability of the game.

Along with the single-player mode, there is an option to play multiplayer over Xbox live, playing with up to 24 other players on 13 different maps. While the missions and hot-swap ability is missing from the multiplayer modes, the intense action and mayhem more than makes up for it.

The Graphics:

The graphics in Battlefield 2 were merely average, with nothing noteworthy that stands out. Many of the environments were drawn with good detail, and the weapons looked very realistic. However, the environment was less interactive and persistent than most; enemies disappeared as soon as they were killed, and the explosions lacked realism. Also, the blood and gore found in other FPS games was missing.



The Audio:

The audio in Battlefield 2 is pretty good, which crisp effects and good voiceovers. The background music was a little repetitive but not annoying.

Conclusion:

Conclusion Battlefield 2 Modern Combat lives true to the Battlefield name and is overall a satisfactory attempt to port the popular PC game to the Xbox console. The multiplayer mode has the same chaos and action that we’ve come to expect, and the single-player mode is surprisingly interesting and adds a new aspect to the game. While many aspects of the game such as the controls, graphics, and audio, are average, overall this game is fun to play both by yourself and with others.

Pros:

+ Enjoyable single-player with interesting objectives and reward system
+ Fun multi-player action
+ Solid audio
+ True to the Battlefield name

Cons:

- Plain graphics
- Slow controls
- Average gameplay
